Woodland Hills, CALIFORNIA - May 8, 2014 - Blanca is a responsible, hardworking and very loving mama to her two year old son Angel.  Blanca was working full time and Angel was cared for by a family member during the work day, it seemed life was on the up-swing. But, as the old adage goes, when it rains it pours. For Blanca and Angel the rain became a downpour. The landlord of the apartment building Blanca and Angel had been living in since Angel’s birth, decided he wanted Blanca’s apartment for one of his own family members. Blanca was given thirty days to vacate.  As she was scrambling to find another place to live, within her budget and close to work, the family member taking care of Angel advised Blanca she was only going to be able to do so for a few more months, because she was expecting her own baby. But there was more rain coming, car repairs were needed and car registration was due, it all became more than Blanca could handle alone. To whom does a single working mom turn when she faces situations she cannot handle on her own? When there is no family? Our current government programs are not really designed to provide aid to those who are working and trying to better their lives. Blanca was doing so much right, until so much went wrong.

Blanca and Angel moved from their apartment and into a local motel. The cost of their nightly stay at the motel which was far more than her monthly rent had been, childcare and food, were taking all of Blanca’s paycheck. She completely depleted her savings, and she was desperate and very frightened she would soon be living on the street with her precious son. With no family to turn to, Blanca contacted The Department of Social Services for help. She was told she did not qualify for assistance from Social Services, but a kind and caring government employee advised her to contact Extended Family®, “they might be able to help you.” Blanca completed an application online and forwarded it to Extended Family®. The urgency and desperation she was feeling were evident to the volunteer who read her application. Immediately a volunteer on the Extended Family® Grant Selection Committee made contact with Blanca’s employer and references for verification of information she had included in her application for assistance.

Blanca’s references and eligibility were verified and arrangements were made to have Nina, Blanca’s case worker at Extended Family®, as well as a member of the Grant Selection Committee, pay a visit to Blanca and Angel.  Blanca was presented with a grant award to cover first month’s rent on a new apartment, child care for one month, car registration, plus a little extra for repairs. Blanca was overjoyed, the relief was written all over her face, the only rain visible at that moment was the tears of gratitude. This Mother’s Day will find Blanca and Angel safe and cozy in their new home.

Mark Carmer, Founder and President of Extended Family® explained, “We assist single parents who are employed and working hard for their families, but find it’s still not enough.  Single parents, who are employed in an effort to improve the lives of their children, often fail to qualify for government or charitable assistance because they are earning an income.  Extended Family® believes in helping those who are alone and working hard to help their family.  Being a good single parent is a tough job, but being a good single parent with limited financial resources and little or no support from family or friends is almost impossible. Extended Family® is there to help make things a little easier.  100% of all donations received by Extended Family® go towards assisting single parent families. No money donated is used to pay for the cost of personnel, offices, phones, supplies, postage, administrative costs, marketing costs or any other expense not directly related to assisting a single parent family in need.”

Extended Family® was proud to be there for Blanca and Angel. It wouldn’t be possible without the support of others, as Extended Family® is a 100% volunteer organization that is fully funded by the generosity of individual and corporate donations.
